English Language as a Promotive Force to the Concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’

 Abstract

The sweeping changes on the social, cultural and political terrains have accelerated the integration of nations at the global level. They have not only increased the opportunity to the world trade, but they have also strengthened human beings to go beyond the cultural, social, political and technological dimensions. And English language is playing a vital role in transforming the entire world into a Global Home which is quite similar to the Indian concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.  People in the search of better education and jobs are being migrated to all over the world and English language is helping them to interact across the different cultures. The concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, which means the whole world is home, is based on the philosophy of unity amid diversity and promotes the idea of unity amid the different cultures of the world- Globalization of culture. ‘Globalization of culture’, which is the outcome of ‘Globalization’, promotes the similar concepts such as ‘World Citizenship, ‘Interculturalism’, and ‘Global Home’ and English is being used as a promotive tool. In this way, English language which has the most speakers in the world has become the lingua franca of the world and is promoting the concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.

In this paper, with the help of an investigation, I have discussed how English language promotes ‘Globalization of Culture’, and how ‘Globalization of Culture’ is similar to the Indian concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. I have also discussed the concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ in detail to compare it with other western concepts- ‘World Citizenship, ‘Interculturalism’, and ‘Global Home’ and how English, as the world language, is a helpful tool to promote them.

(Key words: Global Home, Globalization of Culture, World Citizenship, Interculturalism, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, Global lingua franca.)
